CBD for menopause

You know that feeling in the morning where you need to sit in complete silence until your coffee’s had a chance to kick in. Or have you ever found the car keys in the fridge, or spent the day doubting yourself whilst trying to hide the fact you’re burning up and exhausted? You’re not alone – many women feel this during menopause.

And it’s not just an issue of low energy and a lack of sleep. It can be compounded by brain fog too, which brings with it even more anxiety and paranoia. It’s these somewhat invisible symptoms which can be the hardest to deal with – especially if you’re trying to go through “the change” naturally.

There are 34 symptoms of menopause and some studies have shown that regular CBD use could help alleviate this.

Here’s how:

1. Can CBD ease your menopause-related anxiety

Foggy head, forgetting what you were going to say, questioning yourself, words on the tip of your tongue swiftly followed by worrying about how it’s affecting day to day life…  brain fog and the associated anxiety can be debilitating.

It’s a ‘perfect storm scenario’, starting with hormonal changes in perimenopause which affect sleep patterns, energy, memory and brain efficiency.

Thankfully there have been loads of studies which identify the potential impact of CBD on mood, including its built-in anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects. In fact, a study published in 2018 in the Journal of Affective Disorders found that cannabis significantly reduced feelings of depression, anxiety, and stress in both women and men.

Better news still, researchers also reported that women actually experienced greater reductions in anxiety compared to men.

And, in a 2019 study published in the Permanente Journal, researchers looked into whether CBD would improve sleep and anxiety. They provided CBD treatment to 72 adults and found that anxiety scores decreased in 79% of patients within the first month of use.

2. Can CBD help with hot flushes

This is probably the most notorious of all the menopause symptoms and Loose Women favourite Andrea McLean’s recently spoken publicly about her use of CBD to aid her own hot flashes and called it a ‘game changer’.

It does this by stimulating the body’s endocannabinoid system. This helps keep all the body systems (immune, respiratory, digestive etc.) balanced and working together – including the temperature control!

CBD has properties which could also regulate the production of serotonin – which has been linked to those dreaded night sweats.

3. Can CBD give you a better night sleep

61% of women experiencing menopause report sleep disturbances as one of the most frustrating symptoms and the same Permanente Journal study also looked at how CBD use could improve sleep – sleep scores improved in 67% of patients within the first month!

It’s believed CBD does this by tackling the root causes of your sleep issues. It goes without saying that the less anxious you are, the less interruption from night sweats, and the less pain you are in through the day – the better night’s sleep you a likely to get!

4. Reduce menopause related aches and pains

Aches and joint pains can be frequent in post-menopausal women as a result of reduced oestrogen levels. This drop in hormone causes inflammation and swelling in our joints.

Luckily, CBD has been shown in several studies, like this one from 2015 in the journal of Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry, to offer relief from pain and inflammation. And that’s not all.

A 2016 study published in the European Journal of Pain examined the efficiency of transdermal CBD for pain and inflammation in animals. Researchers found that CBD helped reduce swelling as well as other signs of inflammation.

The study concluded that CBD provides potential therapeutic relief when aiming to treat arthritis pain, as well as inflammation caused by hormonal, without any apparent side effects.

5. Prevent bone density loss

A low bone density – a common side effect of menopause – can increase the chance of fractures or bruises, so it is an important symptom to treat.

Some research has found that CBD interacts with a cannabinoid receptor that may play a role in bone density loss. CBD may therefore be able to reduce the rate of bone density loss that can occur during menopause.

And less fractures and bruises can also mean less pain, and then more sleep…
